Ujamaa Hostel was created for volunteers and travellers to provide the best quality low-cost accommodation and volunteer experiences in Arusha, Tanzania. Ujamaa is the Swahili word for “extended family” which in Africa means that every individual work for the benefit of the community. It is the belief that a community should be based on cooperation and that the advancement of the whole is the foundation for each individual’s existence. This ideal is the basis for the Ujamaa Hostel where people can come together to share their skills, expertise and enthusiasm with those in need in the local community, and have a whole lot of fun while doing it!
If you are interested in volunteering, it is our belief that if you want to volunteer you shouldn’t have to pay for the experience so at Ujamaa Hostel we offer free volunteering opportunities with local organizations in desperate need of help. If you are interested in Volunteering with us, we require a minimum commitment of 1 weeks and you can stay as long as you like.
Ujamaa Hostel was established in 2008. Since then has hosted over 900 volunteers who in turn have done countless hours of volunteer work within the local community.
Ujamaa Hostel is managed by, Gasper Shirima and Kareem Roberts. The Ujamaa staff will assist you with anything you need and help you settle into the local culture and find your way around town.
The hostel located in the city of Arusha. Arusha is a medium sized city located in Northwest Tanzania at the base of Mt Meru and about 100kms from Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Arusha is the gateway to The Serengeti National Park, the largest and most impressive game reserve in Africa, as well as the Ngorongoro Crater, which is one of the most pristine and spectacular sights in Tanzania.
Ujamaa Hostel is located in a the quiet suburb of Njiro just outside the centre of town. Only a 5 minute walk to the local Complex Centre where you can find restaurants, movies, ATMs, a western supermarket and other shops. To get to town you will take a local bus or taxi only 10 mins and you can find everything you need.
